Solar PV System Grant

Boost Your Building Energy Rating

A solar PV system adds to the Building Energy Rating (BER) of your home. As such, if you ever need to sell, the market value of your home also increases.

Slashes Electricity Bills

This system saves you a lot of money which should have gone in for electricity bills. Averagely, you can save an annual value of €250 on electricity bills when you use this system. This way, you will be able to spend on more important things.

Emission Reduction

Solar energy is a renewable source of energy. When you use this system, you cut back on your emission of harmful greenhouse gases. Hence, you contribute your quota in saving the environment.

Solar PV System Grant

This grant provides funding for homeowners to install solar panels as well as battery systems in their homes.

How to Qualify for the Grant

  • To be eligible for this grant, homes must have been built and dwelt in before 2011.

  • The homes must also not have received any previous solar PV support.

  • The homes’ Building Energy Rating upon installation must not be lower than BER C.

Remission Duration

The grant costs around €2,100 for every kWp; the remission duration is based on:

  • Startup cost

  • Electricity cost

  • Amount of energy produced by the system

  • Panel maintenance

Grant Value Offered

  • You receive up to 2kWp, at €900 for every kWp (A 2kWp solar system features 6 to 7 panels).

  • For every extra kWp (up to 4kWp), you receive €300.

  • For a 3kWp system, you receive €2,100 for panels, and €600 for batteries.

  • For a 4kWp system, you receive €2,400 for panels, and €600 for batteries.

Batteries allow unused solar energy to be stored and used at times when there is no sunlight. This system is relatively new and should only be used in specific homes and buildings.

Application Process

To apply for this grant, follow the steps below:

1.     Locate and negotiate with a certified SEAI solar dealer. If possible, visit several dealers and obtain quotes from them. Select your preferred dealer and then set up working terms and conditions with them.

2.     Send your applications to SEAI for the grant. The grants are valid for only eight months, and you are not to begin any installation before you receive the offer.

3.     Reach out to ESB Network for the connection of the system to the electricity system. This process takes at least one month to process, and your preferred dealer must receive this permission before any installation work can commence.

4.     Have your dealer install the solar system, then make the payments according to your initial agreement with them.

5.     Carry out a building energy rating analysis after the installation. The cost should also be included in the final documents.

6.     Your dealer will send you copies of the installation documents and also forward a copy to SEAI for the grant.

7.     The SEAI will consider each application within a timeframe of 6 weeks before grants are offered.

Finally

It is crucial that you are conversant with solar PV systems and how they work before investing in them. Also, find out if your home qualifies to have a solar PV system installation.
