Is It Worth Getting An Electric Vehicle In Ireland?

Are you considering getting your next car? Maybe you’re wondering if you should get a petrol, diesel, hybrid or just go fully EV. One of the most common questions people are asking themselves is “is it really worth getting an ev in Ireland?”

The short answer is Yes! Going full electric is not only great for the environment but it’s also great for your wallet too.

Cost Savings

The cost savings of going fully electric speak for themselves. Fuel prices are constantly rising and have recently reached an all time high and they more than likely aren’t going to be coming back down to what they once were. Oil is running out and therefore that will drive up the price of petrol. The SEAI estimates that you could save up to 70% fueling your car by switching to an EV. It’s also worth noting that many electric vehicles have less moving parts in comparison to a traditional combustion engined car which means less things can go wrong and therefore less money needs to be spent fixing them.

Convenience

Imagine never having to stop at a petrol station again. No more waiting in line or having to pay for overpriced petrol. Sounds glorious right? With an electric car you can rest assured that you can charge your car from the comfort of your own home with an EV charger installed outside your house. You could also charge your ev from a friend's house if you had a 3 pin connection charger or they had their own ev charger installed there too. No more having to stop on your way to or from work to fill up the car. Just plug in a go.

The Infrastructure Is Improving

Many question if Ireland has the infrastructure to facilitate EV’s and as of now you’ll find that many garages along motorways have been equipped with EV Chargers. Many shopping centers, hotels and supermarkets have installed them too. There is also a vast network of esb public charging stations across the country too. You can check them out here.

Grants & Incentives

Aside from fuel savings and convenience there are also a number of grants available to help you get up and running with your new EV. The SEAI are offering up to €5000 off your new electric car and up to €600 off your EV Charger. Instantly that’s a total cost saving of €5600 off your brand new car. You’d be hard pressed to find that type of discount in any dealership.
